White Van Roadshow

White Van Roadshow 1The North East’s first “White Van Roadshow” tour kicked off on 18th October and visited sites around the region - the tour spent two days in Middlesbrough, two days in Newton Aycliffe, and finished with a day in Sunderland on 22nd October.  At each site, we met as many construction workers as possible - approximately 500 in total!  We highlighted some of the dangers they face every day and there were practical demonstrations on new safety equipment.  Each worker received a "goody bag" and entered their evaluation sheets into a draw for an HD TV / DVD Combi - Neil Preece from Airedale was the lucky winner.  For more photographs click on the image on the left.

Future Programme

Following the AGM and meeting on 17th June 2010, Working Well Together North East have decided to organise the following events during the next year - High 5 Safety and Health Awareness Day (SHAD), Groundworks SHAD and a White Van Roadshow Tour.  Keep checking our Events webpage for further details.

Launch Event

More than 200 construction workers attended our launch event at Wynyard Park, Billingham on 28th April 2010.

Builders, scaffolders, roofers, electricians, joiners, painters and other construction workers were given a series of presentations on everything from silica dust awareness to reducing risks from manual handling.

There was also an exhibition with distributors and suppliers of new equipment, services, ideas and solutions, plus a health and safety prize draw quiz with first prize being a Wii Fit and Console.

The day was a huge success and the fact that so many construction workers attended shows just how important the industry considers health and safety issues.  Robert Burrell from Stockton Borough Council Highways Department said "The course was very good. One of the best I have been on." whilst Pat McCourt from Mears Group Plc said "It was very well organised with relevant content.  Excellent event."

Huge thanks to the presenters, and all those who gave their help and time in making the event the success it was.

 Silica Awareness Events

Throughout March 2010 members of WWT NE attended various builders merchants in the region and advised small building contractors on health and safety issues, including the dangers of respirable crystalline silica (RCS) found in building products such as bricks, flags, tiles and concrete.  There are some useful resources that can be used for toolbox talks or presentations including an information leaflet, a Presentation and video (approx 5mins 30secs).  There's also an interesting video from 1938!

Additionally, BSIF and HSE, together with a number of safety industry stakeholders, have launched the 'Clean Air? Take Care!' campaign which focuses on overcoming the often ineffective use of Respiratory Protection Equipment (RPE).  There are some useful resources from their website including an RPE Product Selection Guide and a toolbox talk helping you to correctly select and use respirators.
