North & West Yorkshire - About Us

Introduction

The North and West Yorkshire Working Well Together Group (WWT) is part of a national campaign to help reduce death and injury in the construction industry. Our group is part of a national construction industry health and safety initiative aimed at helping smaller businesses and organisations.  The Health & Safety Executive is involved in the Working Well Together initiative.

Every year thousands of construction workers in the UK are killed, injured or have their health damaged.  Our volunteer members are passionate about promoting positive health and safety culture whilst demonstrating how small businesses can achieve this. Reducing administrative red tape whilst making construction workers more aware of health issues and safe working practices.  Starting or growing a business can be very challenging, so it’s natural for entrepreneurs to tap into all the help they can find.  Over the last 20 years our group has developed into one of the most successful, health and safety initiatives within the construction industry.  Members and individuals of the North and West Yorkshire WWT Group give up their free time and also provide free resources to help businesses. Many of our volunteers are people who manage or own businesses themselves.  Our volunteer members dedicate themselves to providing events in North and West Yorkshire throughout the year, the majority of these events are completely free for you to attend. Many of these would normally cost significant sums as commercial events, which we recognise can be cost prohibitive for smaller businesses.

The North and West Yorkshire WWT Group comprises of over 40 volunteers (from 33 companies) who attend meetings and help put on these events throughout the year. We manage our group by an elected committee of volunteers as detailed below:

Secretary – Richard Thorpe (Health & Safety Executive Visiting Officer – Construction Division Leeds).

Chair – Ralph Baqar (Managing Director – Focus Safety Ltd)

Vice Chair – Mark Nicholson (St Leger Homes)

Treasurer – Roland Webb (South & West Yorkshire NHS Trust)

4th Committee Member – Lynda Parkinson (HB Projects Ltd)

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of our WWT Group & Committee meeting were held on 23rd April 2021 via Zoom. The elected roles remained the same (eg. same people as listed above to carry on doing them from 23rd April 2021 for one year).

The next Committee meeting will be on Friday 10th September 2021 10am-11.30am via Zoom.

If you are interested in becoming a Member of our WWT Group you are more than welcome to attend the meetings please email formsadmin.leeds@hse.gov.uk to register your interest in joining us.

Programme of Events for 2021/22:

21st September 2021 - Temporary Works in Construction Awareness event (via Zoom) as a first event – same event as was planned pre-COVID pandemic for March 2020. See Events section for details

Principal Designer role – theory based event via Zoom or equivalent. Consultation held recently in the industry, an often misunderstood role so worth covering via an event.

Building Safety Regulation legal update.

Mental Health in Construction event.

Mock Trial – same as previous years but will have to see re possible COVID-19 constraints as this event has to be done in person. Can do later in the events year (Jan to March 2022) hopefully.
